Are you ready to roll with the punches?

Are you preparing for the unexpected?
It always seems to happen at the worst possible time. I just sent out a free gift to my subscribers and an hour or so later the network center where my server is hosted goes down due to a power outage.
Hmmm. Whodathunkit? It never ceases to amaze me what Mr. Murphy can do to your business. If you don't take Mr. Murphy and his law into account when you are doing the strategic planning of your business you better start.
Now lets look at just three things that can and do go wrong with an online business.
- Your computer just dies. Yep machines do that all the time often without any notice.
- Your server dies. A server is nothing more than a computer that is hooked to the infrastructure of the web.
- Your isp quits working.
Let's address ways that you can plan for these things.

Always have a full back up of your computer preferably done daily. If you are serious about your business having a mirror computer is a good thing. I have a lap top that has everything that is on my desktop. One of the things I am lax on is updating them daily but at least once a week they get synched.
- Now you can mirror your server on a different host and that is something I am looking at but the easy things that you can do is have backups. If you have a good host they are backing things up also but I never depend on them for that. Every site I own can be wiped clean but each and every one can be put back off of my desk top. The only exception would be the ones using data bases as I only download those weekly. In a worst case scenario only 5-6 days maximum of activity would be lost.
- Having more than one ISP is mandatory in my opinion. A cheap dial up account can be a life saver if something would ever happen with my cable connection. Wouldn't be nice to deal with but would at the very least allow me to stay in business.
There are lots of other things that can and will go wrong in your business and taking a bit of time to have alternative plans in place before hand can mean the difference between a minor annoyance and a major catastrophe.
Take the time to at least think about the various things that can go wrong and start to make alternative plans now.

I did something Saturday that I rarely if ever do. Joined a brand new traffic exchange that hadn't even launched. I have been involved in using traffic exchanges since 2000 and haven't seen a new must join traffic exchange launch since Traffic Pods. The two young men that are launching Link Crews have created more buzz then I have seen in quite a while and won't launch until Tuesday. If you use traffic exchanges regularly you have probably seen many emails on this. I know I did. You can't surf yet but you can join and start to recruit so if you are a serious exchange user this one is worth checking out and you won't hear that from me very often. They also have a very good one time offer so pay attention if you decide to join it.
