Do you build YOUR list first?

I see lots of affiliate marketers that are missing the boat. Are you one of them?
Now I run an affiliate program and probably shouldn’t even write this article ;-). After all it is to my advantage as a product owner to let you keep making this simple mistake. But my conscience would bother me so I guess I will finish this article.
First understand that affiliate marketing can be a great way to build a business done right. Unfortunately, most new marketers don’t understand the right way, they want the easy way.
Let me tell you that the easy way works to the owner of the products advantage. You need to capture your customer first.
Let’s take a quick look at what happens if you don’t take the time to set up a sales process and just send your potential customer to an affiliate page.
You end up either making a sale or the person leaves and does nothing.
We will look at what happens if you actually make the sale which is your best case first. You get paid a commission which is good but the product owner gets a customer with the email address and contact information. Who gets to follow up with that person? It’s sure not you.
In the worst case scenario - your potential sale leaves the affiliate site without purchasing - it is even worse. If the product owner is doing what they should be they made an attempt to gather your prospects contact information through a squeeze page of some type.
Again, the owner benefits from your traffic not you.
Now, if you had taken the time to set up a sales process and instead of advertising the affiliate site you advertised YOUR squeeze page it is much different. The person that bought was interested in that item so you probably could have gotten them to sign up to your special report on that topic.
You could still send them there AFTER you had gathered the follow up information. You still get the sale but you now have the contact too.
The person that left without buying may have had enough interest to sign up for your special report. It is entirely possible and even probable that after reading your report and creating the desire for the product that person will go back and buy the product.
If they don’t there just may be something else you recommend (note you are no longer a peddler after your special report but a trusted source) that they will need and buy.
Please take the time to set up your full sales process so you benefit. If not as a product owner I thank you for building my list.

Will try again next week and hopefully not have any senior moments. Guess that is why you need to mark down Tuesday at 8pm edt in your calendar book.

Building your list by leveraging your network

One of the fallacies some new people have is that you can build your business alone. This probably is one of the biggest causes of failure for people trying to make money online.
Now I know a lot of people bad mouth the Good Old Boy network. The network, whether they be boys or girls is the key to growing your business.
People do business with people that they know and trust. Building relationships is the key to any type of business online or off.
Why do you need a network?
Sitting in your house by yourself at that pc day after day can be extremely hard. How do you stay motivated? Having a buddy that you hold yourself accountable to can be extremely motivating.
I don’t know about you but I do know that if I have made a commitment to someone else I always go out of my way to keep it. Now I try to do that with myself but I can give myself excuses why I didn’t much easier than I can someone else.
Having someone that can answer a question or bounce ideas around with can be invaluable.
Now, how can your network help you build your list?
Have a new product, a new viral book? Aren’t the people in your network that know and trust you more likely to promote your new product? Sure they are.
All you have to do to leverage your network to build your list is to find a win-win situation.
Here is an example. I own Viral Tool Set and create viral rebrandable e-books for clients. Each time the customer launches their product I promote it to my lists of people that are interested in Viral Tool Set. It helps my customer start their list and allows me to show all my prospective customers another finished product.
We both win.
There are a few other ways to make a win-win. If you are creating a mailing list, have a one time offer after people subscribe. Offer your network a percentage of the OTO by setting up an affiliate program for it.
They send you prospective subscribers for your promotion in hopes of making some money. You both win.
In summary - Your network is your most important asset. Properly used it will help you solve problems, avoid mistakes and can even be leveraged to help build your list.

Last week I posted that I would try using Camtasia to save the seminars. I did but the file is guite large. It came in at 70mb. You may download it here and you will need Windows Media Player to view it.
If you download it please leave a comment on the blog here. I don’t mind creating these and using the bandwidth to deliver them but do want to make sure that people are actually using them. Hope you enjoy.
